Hi folks,
I've removed the poll on March travel dates as we are now going next week. Maybe as the 'dust settles' we can look at future dates for work in the clinic or hospital.
This blog is for those of us from our area who have gone or are going to Haiti to do medical relief work. Here we can share our stories and photos, plan and just keep in touch.

Tuesday flight update:
I just spoke with Charles. Tuesday 3 am would be a Transat charter. We would not return on the same charter. The return options are to fly via MFI to Florida then fly from there, to put our names on a wait list at the Embassy and fly with the military to Trenton, or to hope for resumption of commercial flights and return that way. Charles points out the government may be showing more willingness to help now - perhaps this would translate into another return option.

Weather info for Haiti:
The need for health care in Haiti is obviously independent of the weather, but one concern that has come up in e-mails is regarding the weather changes as spring approaches.
The rainfall doubles from March to April, and reaches a maximum for the year in May. Hurricane season is later in the summer, though tropical storms can hit anytime in the spring and summer.
From a travel website:
The best time to go is November-March, when day temperatures are in the 70s-80s F/23-32 C and nights are in the 60s-70s F/15-27 C. The rainy season is May-July, but even when it rains, it usually lasts for only an hour or two in the evening. Hurricane season is July-October.

HI everyone,
The questions of licensure and medicolegal status while abroad are pretty important. Thanks Angella for bringing this up. I'll ask our college about this and get back to everyone. The answers may or may not be relevant to the nurses in the group, but as suggested perhaps Dean or Charles may be able to wade in on this.

Hi All,
I had lunch with Dr. Ravi and his wife yesterday and we discussed a few different dates. I think that the three doctors should collaborate a few different dates and throw them back to the team. I also had a concern about liability. If we were going to work in a wound clinic I won't be as apprehensive. However, we are doing surgery and as we all know surgery is a risk. I contacted the Nurses Association and they said that normally if we are going into another country we need to be registered with that country. However, due to the extenuating circumstances Haiti maybe waiving this. If this is so the NB Nurses Association would cover the nurses case for liability. The representative from the Association is looking into it and will contact the Dept of Health in Haiti. I was wondering if anyone had researched this yet? Dean or Charles may have some information? You just never know!

Travel dates?
We've had one door close on us when we lost our transportation to Haiti for this week, but we're looking at opening up another door...
Folks seems keen to go, and with the resumption of commercial flights we should be able to make the trip happen. March 22nd week was suggested (as many of us are away early March), but no time is perfect. If we can agree on a week, then we can all plan our schedules and make it happen.

Let's see if we can come to consensus here, then we can plan for real!
